Brutal Foot Mystery on the Camino: Symmetrical, Itchy, Painful Spots—Pilgrim Nightmare or Something More?

Blisters are almost a rite of passage on the Camino—but what happens when the marks on your feet don’t behave like typical friction spots? Some pilgrims are reporting a more puzzling issue: symmetrical, itchy, and painful lesions appearing on both feet in exactly the same places. It’s uncomfortable, concerning, and can quickly turn a spiritual journey into a physical ordeal.
Unlike standard blisters caused by rubbing, these spots often show up as small, inflamed patches or bumps. The fact that they appear in identical locations on each foot suggests something more than simple friction.
One possibility is contact dermatitis—an allergic reaction to something touching your skin, like sock material, laundry detergent, or even chemicals in your boots. Another suspect could be a fungal infection, especially given the warm, moist environment inside hiking footwear. Athlete’s foot doesn’t always stay between the toes—it can spread across the sole and present as itchy, irritated patches.
There’s also the chance of dyshidrotic eczema, a condition triggered by stress, heat, or sweating, all of which are common on long-distance walks like the Camino. It typically causes itchy, painful blisters on the soles and can appear symmetrically.
So what can you do? First, keep your feet clean and dry—change socks regularly and let your shoes air out. Consider switching to moisture-wicking socks and avoid anything you may be reacting to. Over-the-counter antifungal creams can help if it’s fungal, while hydrocortisone may reduce inflammation from dermatitis or eczema. If the condition worsens, becomes severely painful, or shows signs of infection, it’s worth seeking medical attention along the route.
Your feet are your most valuable asset on the Camino—listen to them, care for them, and don’t ignore unusual signs.
