Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has alleged that his former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, funded a plot to impeach him while they were in office, claiming that Atiku gave then-Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Na’Abba, ₦5 million to kick-start the impeachment process.
According to Obasanjo, the alleged payment was reported to him by his Chief of Staff, whom he described as a professional intelligence officer. He said the impeachment move formed part of what he characterized as an attempt by Atiku to seize power “by hook or by crook.”
The former President made the claims in a statement responding to former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba’s account of the political events leading up to the 2003 general elections. Obasanjo also rejected Osoba’s assertion that he deceived Alliance for Democracy (AD) leaders during the period.
