A former Assistant Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Dennis Amachree, has dismissed long-standing claims that Nigeria’s former military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, was poisoned.

According to Amachree, Abacha died from a heart attack and not from foul play, as has been widely alleged over the years. He stated that available information pointed to a natural medical emergency rather than assassination or poisoning.

His remarks come amid renewed public discussions about the circumstances surrounding Abacha’s sudden death on June 8, 1998. Over the years, several conspiracy theories have circulated, including claims that he died while in the company of women. However, Amachree maintained that there is no credible evidence supporting those allegations and insisted that the former military ruler suffered a fatal heart attack.
