Wayne County prosecutor: Charges won’t be filed in Richmond homicide
Criminal charges won’t be filed as a result of a recent fatal stabbing, Wayne County Prosecutor Michael Shipman said this week.
“The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office conducted an extensive review of all evidence submitted by the Richmond Police Department surrounding the death of Douglas Jones,” Shipman said Thursday. “The applicable law and defenses were carefully examined and analyzed in light of the evidence. At this time, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office has declined to file charges.”
About 11:55 p.m. on Jan. 3, city officers found Jones, a 39-year-old Richmond man, in the 600 block of South P Street, “lying in the street, bleeding and unconscious,” according to a news release from the Richmond Police Department.
Jones — who had been stabbed — was taken to Reid Hospital by Richmond Fire medics and died there before he could be flown by medical helicopter to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio.
Police had been sent to the scene after emergency dispatchers received a report of an “unwanted person” at that address.
“Preliminary findings indicate there was a physical encounter between Mr. Jones and the resident upon Mr. Jones’ arrival at the address,” according to the release.
This week, Richmond police posted another release on Facebook.
“The Richmond Police Department remains committed to conducting thorough and impartial investigations,” Police Chief Kyle Weatherly said. “We appreciate the collaboration of the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office in carefully reviewing this case and ensuring every legal consideration was examined.”
