3 adult killed, 12 juveniles injured in Wayne County crash
Three women were killed and 12 juveniles were injured during a crash in Wayne County late Saturday afternoon.
According to a press release, Wayne County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the intersection of U.S. Highway 27 South and State Road 122 around 4 p.m. to investigate a serious motor vehicle crash. When deputies arrived at the scene, they found two vehicles in a field located southwest of the intersection.
As police approached one of the vehicles in the field — a black 2017 Chevrolet Silverado — they saw two occupants inside.
The truck’s driver, a 68-year-old from Manchester, Kentucky, appeared to have significant injuries. The truck’s passenger — 60-year-old Nannie Byrd of Manchester, Kentucky — was unconscious when police found her.
Police rendered medical aid to both of the Silverado’s occupants. Byrd was pronounced dead at the scene, and the 68-year-old driver of the truck was flown to Miami Valley Hospital via medical helicopter.
In addition to the Silverado, deputies also found a 2006 red Dodge Ram in the field. The truck was occupied by two juveniles, both of whom were transported from the scene to Reid Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
After a preliminary investigation, law enforcement determined the driver of the red Dodge was travelling westbound on State Road 122 before the crash. The crash happened when the driver of the Dodge failed to stop at a sign located at the intersection of State Road 122 and U.S. Highway 27.
The driver of the Silverado — who was headed southbound on U.S. Highway 27 before the crash — struck the Dodge when it entered the intersection. Both cars sustained significant damage during the crash, and police believe the Dodge rolled at least once before it came to rest in the nearby field.
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is still actively investigating the crash. As of this article’s publication, no additional information on the crash had been made available.
