European Football Weekend: Levski Sofia Lead the Celebration as Continental Drama Takes Centre Stage

European football once again delivered a weekend filled with emotion, excitement and unforgettable moments as clubs across the continent battled for trophies, promotion, European qualification and playoff success. From dramatic title races to tense promotion contests, supporters were given plenty to celebrate as the new season gathered momentum.

For Levski Sofia, however, the focus has quickly shifted toward European competition and the club’s ambitious Champions League qualifying campaign. The Bulgarian side have enjoyed an impressive run through the preliminary rounds, overcoming Borac Banja Luka, CS Universitatea Craiova and Kairat Almaty to reach the playoff round.

Levski’s progress has created a growing sense of excitement among supporters. The club entered the Champions League qualifying campaign determined to make a strong impression, and their performances have shown considerable resilience. After drawing 1-1 away to Borac Banja Luka in the opening round, Levski produced a commanding 4-0 victory in the return fixture to move forward.

The second qualifying round brought another difficult challenge against CS Universitatea Craiova. Levski won the first leg 1-0 in Sofia before securing a 2-2 draw in Romania, allowing them to progress on aggregate.

Their third-round tie against Kairat Almaty provided another test of character. Levski won 1-0 at home and repeated the scoreline away from home, completing a 2-0 aggregate victory and earning their place in the playoff stage.

That achievement has placed Levski on the brink of the Champions League league phase. The club’s playoff opponent is AEK Athens, with the first leg taking place in Sofia on August 18 and the return fixture scheduled in Athens on August 25. UEFA confirms that the 2026/27 Champions League qualifying competition concludes on August 26, when the final seven league-phase places will be decided.

The first meeting between Levski and AEK ended 0-0 in Sofia, leaving the tie completely open ahead of the decisive second leg.

Across Europe, the weekend atmosphere reflected why football remains one of the continent’s greatest sporting passions. Supporters celebrated victories, mourned painful defeats and watched their clubs fight for opportunities that can define an entire season.

Promotion battles were particularly intense, with newly promoted and ambitious clubs beginning their campaigns hoping to reach football’s biggest stages. In England, the 2026/27 Championship season began on August 14, with 24 clubs competing for promotion to the Premier League while also trying to avoid relegation.

The financial importance of promotion makes these battles more dramatic than ever. Reaching the Premier League can transform a club’s financial position, creating enormous pressure on players, coaches and supporters.

Meanwhile, European competition has provided another stage for clubs dreaming of continental glory. Seven Champions League qualifying ties are determining the final teams to join the 29 clubs already guaranteed places in the league phase. Among the decisive fixtures are Levski Sofia against AEK Athens, Celtic against LASK, Dinamo Zagreb against Viking and Fenerbahçe against Lyon.

For Levski Sofia, the message is clear: the club are no longer simply participating in European football—they are competing with genuine belief. Their unbeaten qualifying journey has given supporters reason to dream, while the 0-0 first-leg result against AEK means everything remains possible.

As European football continues to produce dramatic results, Levski’s journey will be one of the stories watched closely by Bulgarian supporters. A successful result in Athens could take the club into the Champions League league phase and create one of the most memorable European chapters in its recent history.

The celebrations across Europe may have begun with domestic battles, but for Levski Sofia, the biggest celebration could still be waiting.
