BREAKING NEWS: McDermott Claims He Was the Man Who Built the Team

BUFFALO — Former Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott has reportedly made a strong statement about his legacy, with the longtime coach emphasizing the role he played in building the team into a consistent NFL contender.

McDermott’s comments come months after the Bills ended his nine-year tenure. Buffalo officially relieved McDermott of his duties on January 19, 2026, following the team’s playoff defeat to the Denver Broncos.

During his time in Buffalo, McDermott helped oversee one of the most significant transformations in the franchise’s recent history. When he arrived in 2017, the Bills had endured a 17-year playoff drought. Under McDermott, Buffalo immediately returned to the postseason and developed into a regular AFC contender.

The former coach can therefore point to a substantial record when discussing his contribution. He finished his Bills tenure with a 98–50 regular-season record and led the team to eight playoff appearances. Buffalo also won five consecutive AFC East division titles during his tenure.

McDermott’s Legacy

McDermott’s supporters believe his biggest achievement was changing the culture of the organization. He established a demanding defensive identity and helped create an environment in which Buffalo expected to compete for championships every season.

The arrival and development of quarterback Josh Allen also became a major part of that transformation. Allen developed into one of the league’s elite quarterbacks, while the Bills assembled a roster capable of competing deep into the playoffs.

However, McDermott was not solely responsible for constructing the roster. General manager Brandon Beane played a major role in personnel decisions, including drafting and acquiring players. The partnership between McDermott and Beane became closely associated with Buffalo’s rise.

That is why McDermott’s claim that he was the man who “built the team” is likely to generate debate among Bills supporters.

A Team Built to Win

There is nevertheless a strong argument that McDermott helped establish the foundation for Buffalo’s success. His coaching philosophy, defensive schemes, leadership style and organizational standards became central to the team’s identity.

Even after McDermott’s departure, the Bills remain a team shaped by many of the decisions made during his era. The organization has now entered a new chapter under head coach Joe Brady, who previously served as Buffalo’s offensive coordinator.

The change represents a major transition for a franchise that spent nearly a decade under McDermott.

Why Was He Fired?

Despite his impressive regular-season record, McDermott’s tenure ultimately became defined by the team’s inability to reach the Super Bowl. Buffalo consistently entered the playoffs as a serious contender but repeatedly fell short.

The 2025 season ended with another painful playoff exit against Denver. Buffalo lost in overtime in the AFC Divisional Round, and McDermott was dismissed two days later.

That decision created a complicated ending to his time in Buffalo. McDermott had clearly restored the Bills as a major NFL force, but the organization ultimately decided that a change was necessary to take the final step toward a championship.

The Debate Continues

McDermott’s latest comments could therefore reopen an important conversation about who deserves credit for Buffalo’s transformation.

Some will argue that the coach deserves enormous credit because he established the culture and leadership that changed the franchise. Others will point to Beane, Allen and the front office, arguing that building an NFL roster is a collective effort.

What cannot be disputed is that McDermott left Buffalo in a far stronger position than the one he inherited.

His tenure ended without a Super Bowl appearance, but he helped turn the Bills from a franchise struggling to reach the postseason into a team that expected to compete for the AFC championship every year.

Now, as Buffalo begins a new era, McDermott’s claim that he was one of the central architects of the team will remain an important part of the discussion surrounding his legacy.
