Waffle House Horror: Gunman Finally Sentenced in Deadly Panama City Beach Shooting

A deadly shooting outside a late-night breakfast spot in Panama City Beach has reached its final chapter in court, as a judge handed down a lengthy prison sentence to the gunman responsible for the tragic violence.
A 19-year-old man, identified as Ja’Zai Mitchell, was sentenced to 50 years in prison for his role in the fatal shooting that occurred in the parking lot of a Waffle House restaurant in June 2025. The sentence includes 20 years for attempted second-degree murder and 30 years for manslaughter with a firearm, which must be served consecutively under Florida law.
The case stems from a late-night altercation that quickly spiraled into violence.
According to investigators, an argument broke out in the restaurant’s parking lot over the attempted purchase of an illegal firearm. During the confrontation, Mitchell pulled a gun and fired, striking 19-year-old Ja’Dion Hughes, who later died from his injuries.
Authorities say Hughes was not the intended target. Witness testimony during the trial suggested he was attempting to intervene and calm the situation when the gun was fired. Prosecutors argued that Mitchell’s reckless actions showed a complete disregard for human life.
Following the shooting, police said Mitchell fled the scene with another suspect.
Investigators later recovered discarded firearms and quickly tracked down the vehicle used in the escape, leading to multiple arrests connected to the incident.
A jury ultimately found Mitchell guilty of manslaughter, attempted second-degree murder, and other related charges earlier this year.
The sentencing brings a measure of closure for Hughes’ family, who have mourned the loss of a young life cut short by senseless gun violence. Prosecutors said the lengthy prison term sends a strong message about the consequences of escalating disputes with firearms.
For the community of Panama City Beach, the case serves as a sobering reminder that even everyday places can become scenes of tragedy in moments of unchecked anger.
