Pat Smear, born Georg Ruthenberg on August 5, 1959, in Los Angeles, California, is a guitarist known for punk and rock. Co-founding The Germs in 1976, he released GI (1979), a punk landmark. After The Germs disbanded in 1980, he pursued solo work with Ruthensmear (1987) and So You Fell in Love with a Musician… (1992).
Joining Nirvana in 1993 for the In Utero tour, he contributed to MTV Unplugged in New York (1994). With Foo Fighters since 1995, he debuted on The Colour and the Shape (1997), followed by There Is Nothing Left to Lose (1999), One by One (2002), In Your Honor (2005), Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace (2007), Wasting Light (2011), Sonic Highways (2014), Concrete and Gold (2017), Medicine at Midnight (2021), and But Here We Are (2023).
His raw guitar style complements Dave Grohl’s vision. A 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee with Nirvana, Smear appeared in Studio 666 (2022). He tours with Foo Fighters, influencing punk and alternative rock with his energetic presence.
