This is Maggie, a young Red Hot Chili Peppers fan battling cancer whose favorite song was Dosed. She asked Josh Klinghoffer to play it—and the band did. She passed away shortly afterward.
On May 28, 2017, at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Red Hot Chili Peppers performed Dosed live for the very first time, honoring Maggie’s wish during The Getaway Tour. With Zach Irons on second guitar, the band brought her favorite song to life, fulfilling a promise Josh had made to her.
Just days before Maggie passed, her priest, Steven Schmidt, shared her gratitude:
“I can tell you that those men are wonderful souls—they helped our family during a crisis. Normally, they don’t play that song because of the many guitar tracks that make it difficult, but Josh promised our very sick daughter Maggie that they would play it for her. She had told them back in February at Madison Square Garden that her favorite album was By the Way and that she loved Dosed. Of course, she loved all of their songs.”
The moment became even more touching when Flea sang the final line of Deep Kick—”It’s better to regret something you did than something you didn’t do”—creating a lasting tribute to Maggie’s love for By the Way and the band that meant so much to her.
