Off-Duty Cop Fatally Shoots Greenfield K-9 After Vicious Attack: Shocking Details Emerge

Greenfield, IN — A shocking incident unfolded this week when an off-duty police officer fatally shot a Greenfield Police Department K-9 following what authorities are calling a “violent and unprovoked attack.”
The incident occurred late Tuesday evening at the home of Officer Daniel Brooks, who had been caring for K-9 officer Rocco during his off-duty hours. According to preliminary reports, the Belgian Malinois, a 4-year-old veteran of the force, suddenly turned aggressive, biting Officer Brooks and refusing to release despite multiple verbal commands.
Greenfield Police Chief Brian Hart issued a brief statement Wednesday morning, confirming the dog’s death and promising a full internal review. “This is a tragic and deeply emotional situation for our department. K-9 Rocco was not only a valued police asset but also a member of our law enforcement family.”
Officer Brooks, who sustained moderate injuries to his arm and shoulder, reportedly attempted to subdue the dog without lethal force before discharging his weapon. He was treated at Hancock Regional Hospital and released the same night.
Witnesses in the neighborhood reported hearing shouting followed by several gunshots. “It was terrifying. We didn’t know what was going on,” said one resident, who declined to be named.
K-9 Rocco had served with the Greenfield Police Department since 2021 and was involved in numerous successful narcotics operations and suspect apprehensions.
The department says it is working with an external agency to conduct an unbiased investigation. Meanwhile, Officer Brooks has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol in use-of-force cases.
Community members are expressing both sorrow and confusion, with many calling for transparency in the review process.
More details are expected to be released as the investigation progresses. A memorial for K-9 Rocco is being planned by the department in the coming days.
