Shootout in Little River, South Carolina Beach Town Leaves at Least 11 Hospitalized.
A violent shootout erupted late Tuesday evening in the beachside town of Little River, South Carolina, leaving at least 11 people hospitalized and sparking a multi-agency investigation into what authorities are calling a “major public safety incident.”
According to local law enforcement, the shooting occurred near a popular entertainment district along the waterfront, where crowds had gathered for live music and end-of-summer festivities. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as gunfire broke out just after 9:00 PM, sending beachgoers scrambling for cover.
The Horry County Police Department confirmed that multiple individuals were involved in the altercation, though it remains unclear what triggered the violence. No fatalities have been reported as of Wednesday morning, but several of the victims are said to be in critical condition.
“First responders arrived on scene within minutes and immediately began securing the area and providing aid to the injured,” said Sheriff John Erickson during an early morning press conference. “We are grateful to the paramedics, firefighters, and police officers who acted swiftly to prevent further harm.”
Emergency crews transported victims to several nearby hospitals, including Grand Strand Medical Center and McLeod Seacoast Hospital. Authorities have not released the names of the injured, pending family notifications.
Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and interviewing witnesses in an effort to identify the shooters. While no arrests have been made, police indicated that multiple suspects may have fled the scene on foot or in vehicles.
Governor Henry McMaster issued a brief statement condemning the violence and pledging state support for the ongoing investigation. “South Carolina will not tolerate such acts of lawlessness. We will work with local officials to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice,” he said.
Little River, a typically quiet coastal town just north of Myrtle Beach, is popular with tourists and locals alike, especially during the summer months. Residents expressed shock and concern in the aftermath of the incident.
“I’ve lived here for 20 years, and nothing like this has ever happened,” said Jennifer Moore, a local business owner. “It’s heartbreaking to see this kind of violence in our community.”
Police are urging anyone with information or video footage to come forward as the investigation continues.
Further updates are expected as authorities piece together the events leading up to the shooting.
