Today Richmond Police responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting in the 1st block of NW L Street.
When first responders arrived, they found 18-year-old Brian McCracken with a gunshot wound. Despite the best efforts of Richmond Fire Department medics, Brian was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Initial investigation indicates the wound is believed to be self-inflicted. There is no threat to the public. Richmond Police detectives continue to work alongside the Wayne County Indiana Coroner’s Office, who will determine the official cause and manner of death.
Our hearts are with Brian’s family and friends during this heartbreaking time. Losing someone so young is a tragedy no parent, friend, or loved one should have to endure. As a community, we urge everyone to respond with empathy and understanding, especially in moments that call for compassion more than commentary.
We are grateful to the Richmond Fire Department, Reid Health, and the Wayne County Emergency Communications Center for their support during today’s response.
