Man Shot After Alleged Axe Attack in Maggie Valley: Shocking Details Emerge
MAGGIE VALLEY, NC — A violent confrontation in Maggie Valley escalated into a shooting after a man allegedly attacked another individual with an axe, according to newly released charges.
Authorities say the incident occurred late Sunday afternoon at a private residence on the outskirts of the quiet mountain town. Haywood County deputies responded to reports of a disturbance involving a weapon. When they arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound and another individual claiming self-defense.
According to the initial investigation, the altercation began when the victim — whose name has not yet been publicly released — allegedly approached the shooter while wielding an axe in a threatening manner. Witnesses reported a heated argument escalating quickly into violence.
“The shooter claims he was forced to act in self-defense when the other man came at him with the axe,” said Sheriff Bill Wilke. “Our deputies are working closely with witnesses and reviewing evidence from the scene.”
The man who fired the weapon remained on site and cooperated with law enforcement. He has not been charged at this time, though the investigation is ongoing. The man who was shot was transported to a nearby hospital and is reportedly in stable condition.
Court documents show the axe-wielding man is now facing multiple charges, including assault with a deadly weapon. Investigators have not yet revealed what led to the confrontation, but both parties are known to each other, and the incident is believed to be isolated.
Neighbors expressed shock at the violence, describing the area as normally peaceful.
“This kind of thing just doesn’t happen here,” said one longtime resident. “It’s really shaken the community.
Authorities continue to urge anyone with additional information to come forward as the investigation progresses.
