Littlefield Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for Mother’s Murder
A Levelland man has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2019 murder of his mother, Jill Atchison. Jeremy Atchison, 28, was convicted of capital murder after strangling and shooting his mother during a robbery attempt at her home in Levelland, Texas. The crime occurred on August 31, 2019, when officers responded to a welfare check at the 400 block of E. Jackson St. Upon arrival, they observed Jeremy exiting the residence and fleeing in his truck, leading to a brief pursuit before his capture. Inside the home, authorities discovered Jill’s body.
The trial was moved to Lamb County to ensure an impartial jury. Prosecutors presented evidence that Jeremy had planned to rob his mother, leading to the fatal attack. Despite pleading not guilty by reason of insanity, the jury found him guilty, and the judge imposed the mandatory life sentence.
This case highlights the tragic consequences of familial violence and the importance of addressing mental health issues within the justice system. The community remains shaken by the loss of a mother at the hands of her own son.
