Deadly ‘Bomb Cyclone’ Strikes Belleview: 2 Women Killed by Falling Trees
BELLEVIEW — A powerful “bomb cyclone” ripped through Belleview late Saturday, leaving behind a path of destruction and claiming the lives of two women. The intense storm, marked by hurricane-force winds and torrential rain, caused multiple trees to topple across the city, crushing vehicles, damaging homes, and downing power lines.
Authorities confirmed that both victims were killed when large trees fell in separate incidents. One woman, in her 60s, was struck while walking her dog. The second victim, a 34-year-old mother, was inside her car when a tree collapsed onto the vehicle near Pine Grove Avenue.
Emergency crews worked through the night to clear debris and restore access to blocked roads. Over 20,000 residents were left without power, and schools in the area announced closures for Monday.
Meteorologists say the storm rapidly intensified, meeting the criteria for a bomb cyclone — a rare weather phenomenon where atmospheric pressure drops dramatically in a short period.
“This was one of the most severe storms we’ve seen in years,” said Mayor Linda Rourke. “Our hearts go out to the families of the victims.”
Officials urge residents to remain indoors as cleanup continues and warn of the risk of further falling debris.
