‘We Never Thought It Could Happen Here’: Norman Grieves in Wake of Heartbreak
Norman, Oklahoma — A quiet community is now cloaked in sorrow following a tragic event that has left residents in shock and mourning. On Thursday evening, a devastating accident claimed the lives of three local high school students, shaking the foundation of this tight-knit town.
The crash occurred near 24th Avenue Southeast just after 7:30 p.m. According to authorities, the vehicle lost control on a rain-slicked road and collided with a utility pole. Two students were pronounced dead at the scene, while a third later succumbed to injuries at Norman Regional Hospital. A fourth passenger remains in critical condition.
“These were kids with bright futures,” said Principal Dana Wells of Norman High School, where all four teens attended. “They were beloved by their classmates and teachers alike. This loss is unimaginable.”
Vigils began springing up across the city within hours. Flowers, candles, and handwritten notes now surround the school’s front steps. Hundreds gathered Friday night at Reaves Park to honor the victims with prayers, music, and tears.
“We never thought it could happen here,” said longtime resident Tonya Hernandez. “You read about things like this, but when it’s your town… your children… it’s unbearable.”
Counseling services have been made available to students, staff, and families affected by the tragedy. Local churches and nonprofits are also stepping in to support those in need.
