Heartbreaking Crash Claims Lives of Grandmother and Young Granddaughter in Maggie Valley
Maggie Valley, NC — A quiet mountain community is mourning after a devastating crash claimed the lives of a grandmother and her 8-year-old granddaughter on Tuesday afternoon in Haywood County.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the tragic accident occurred just after 2:00 p.m. along U.S. Highway 19 near Maggie Valley. Authorities say the victims were traveling eastbound when their vehicle was struck by an oncoming pickup truck that reportedly crossed the center line.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene within minutes, but both the grandmother, identified as 67-year-old Linda Mayfield of Waynesville, and her granddaughter, Emily Mayfield, were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pickup truck sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Investigators are still working to determine what caused the vehicle to veer into oncoming traffic. No charges have been filed at this time, but the investigation remains active.
Family members describe Linda as a devoted grandmother and loving member of her church, who enjoyed gardening and spending time with her grandchildren. Emily was a second-grade student at Jonathan Valley Elementary, remembered by teachers as a bright, joyful child who loved reading and animals.
The Haywood County School District has mobilized grief counselors to support students and staff coping with the loss. A candlelight vigil is being planned by community members for later this week.
“This is an unimaginable tragedy,” said Sheriff Greg Christopher. “Our hearts go out to the family and everyone affected by this terrible loss.”
Officials urge drivers to stay alert and use caution on mountain roads, where conditions can change quickly.
Further details will be released as the investigation continues.
