Driver dies after multi-car wreck at Ohio’s Eldora Speedway.
A 35-year-old driver died after suffering severe injuries in a crash Saturday night at Eldora Speedway, the Ohio dirt track owned by NASCAR driver Tony Stewart.
The World 100, a late-model race, continued after Shane Unger, a resident of Rossburg, Ohio, was severely injured in a multi-car crash in a heatl race. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he died, Eldora Speedway General Manager Roger Slack said in a news release.
Slack told USA TODAY Sports in an email that Unger’s car was equipped with a HANS device, which stops a driver’s head and neck from moving forward in a collision.
“The Unger family has conveyed their appreciation of the prayers and support expressed by the racing community and requests their privacy be respected at this time,” Slack wrote in the statement.
Fans fashioned a memorial along the outside of the track.
