Body Found in Dolomites Believed to Be One of Two British Hikers Missing Since New Year’s Day.
The search for two British hikers missing in the Italian Dolomites since New Year’s Day has taken a tragic turn. Authorities have confirmed that a body discovered on January 8 is believed to be that of Samuel Harris, 35, from London. He and his hiking partner, Aziz Ziriat, 36, were last heard from on January 1 after sending messages home from the Trentino region in northern Italy. They failed to board their flight back to the UK on January 6, prompting concern among their families and friends.
The body was found buried under snow at the base of a rock face on Carè Alto mountain near Trento, an area where one of the hikers’ phones had last transmitted a signal. Rescue teams, including alpine rescue personnel and dog units, had been searching the area since the alarm was raised. The discovery was made after weather conditions improved enough to allow for aerial searches. The cause of death is not yet confirmed, but authorities suggest a fall from a height is a possible explanation.
The search for Ziriat continues, though it has been hampered by heavy snowfall and poor visibility. Rescuers have found items belonging to him, including a mobile phone cover and a card, not far from where Harris’s body was located. Despite these findings, no further trace of Ziriat has been discovered. The search area has been expanded, and efforts are ongoing.
Both men were described as experienced hikers who had planned a hut-to-hut journey through the Dolomites, aiming to spend New Year’s in the mountains. They had intended to go off-grid, which is not unusual for them, according to friends. However, the failure to check in for their flight raised alarms, leading to the search operation.
The families of both men have traveled to Italy and are being supported by psychologists during this difficult time. The search for Ziriat is expected to resume as soon as weather conditions permit.
This incident highlights the inherent risks associated with high-altitude hiking in challenging winter conditions. Authorities continue to urge caution and thorough preparation for those venturing into such environments.
