Passenger dies, several seriously injured in two-vehicle crash in Wayne Co.
A crash on Saturday afternoon left one person dead and multiple injured.
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office reports a crash occurred around 4 p.m. on South U.S. Highway 27 and State Route 22 on Jan. 11. Initial reports indicated two vehicles were involved, with multiple injuries and one person reported unresponsive.
Upon arrival, first responders found a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado and a 2006 Dodge Ram in a field just southwest of the intersection.
Both occupants of the Chevrolet were found inside the vehicle. The 68-year-old male driver sustained significant injuries while the 60-year-old female passenger, identified as Nanny Byrd, was found unconscious.
Medics performed live-saving care but Byrd was pronounced dead on scene. The driver was flown to Miami Valley Hospital for his injuries.
The two occupants of the Dodge were identified as juveniles — they were taken to a local hospital for their injuries.
Investigation into the crash shows the Chevrolet was southbound on US-27 approaching the SR-122. The Dodge was westbound on SR-122 when the driver failed to stop at the stop sign and continued into the intersection.
The cars crashed into each other, causing significant damage to both vehicles alongside the injuries to the occupants. It is believed the Dodge rolled at least once.
The crash remains under investigation. Wayne County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by Richmond Police Department, Richmond Fire Department, Abington Fire Department, Reid EMS, Union County Sheriff’s Department, and CareFlight.
