Fatal Crash on US 40 in Greenfield Claims One Life.

A fatal crash on U.S. 40 in Greenfield claimed the life of one man Tuesday afternoon, prompting a temporary road closure and an ongoing investigation by local authorities.
According to the Greenfield Police Department, officers were dispatched to the scene near the intersection of U.S. 40 and County Road 200 East shortly after 2 p.m. Upon arrival, first responders found two heavily damaged vehicles and several motorists who had stopped to help. Emergency medical personnel attempted life-saving measures on one of the drivers, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released pending notification of family members.
Police said the preliminary investigation indicates that one vehicle may have crossed the center line before colliding head-on with an oncoming car. The driver of the second vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation. Authorities have not yet indicated whether speed, impairment, or weather conditions played a role in the crash.
The accident led to the closure of a portion of U.S. 40 for several hours as crash reconstruction teams examined the scene and crews worked to clear debris. Traffic was diverted to alternate routes, causing delays for afternoon commuters.
Officials are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have dash camera footage from the area around the time of the crash to contact the Greenfield Police Department.
The investigation remains ongoing. Further details, including the identity of the victim and any potential contributing factors, are expected to be released as they become available.
U.S. 40 is a major east-west corridor through Hancock County, and authorities continue to urge drivers to use caution and remain attentive while traveling through the area.
