Former Lyons high school basketball coach sentenced to probation for sexual conduct with student.

Lyons, N.Y. — A former high school basketball coach in Wayne County avoided prison time after pleading guilty to third-degree criminal sexual act.
Dean Schott II, a 22-year employee of the Lyons Central School District who served as boys varsity basketball coach, was charged in August with third-degree criminal sex act and sexual abuse for allegations stemming from April 2019.
The district said it received a report April 8 claiming Schott was involved in an inappropriate relationship with a student several years ago.
Schott was escorted off campus during a school day after the allegations surfaced, according to Sheriff Rob Milby.
The district said Schott resigned immediately and there was no evidence any current students were involved.
Judge Richard Healy sentenced Schott to 10 years of probation.
The sentence requires Schott to register as a sex offender and includes a final order of protection for the victim, according to the Wayne County District Attorney’s Office.
“The victim’s courage in coming forward exposed a serious abuse of trust,” District Attorney Christine Callanan said in a statement. “Individuals placed in positions of authority and access to our children carry an absolute responsibility to protect them, not exploit them. This sentence ensures the defendant will no longer have the opportunity to harm another student, and this Office will continue to hold accountable anyone who violates that trust.”
