Greenfield Man Arrested After Toddler Found In The Snow

Greenfield, IN. – Around 3 pm on Monday, December 15th, Greenfield officers were dispatched to the Prairie Meadows apartment complex on reports of a small child wandering outside wearing only a diaper. Officers arrived quickly and were able to get the child inside a warm vehicle until EMS personnel arrived. The toddler was transported to an Indianapolis hospital for treatment, in stable condition.
Officers located the toddler wearing only a diaper and was suffering from hypothermia. Officers found footprints in the snow around the complex where the toddler was located, indicating that they were walking through the snow for a while. The footprints lead officers to an apartment on Switchgrass Drive with an open front door. Officers made announcements into the apartment and got no response.
Officers conducted a security check of the second-floor apartment and found a man, later identified as Logan Nickolas (20), asleep on a couch. Officers made several loud announcements before the man woke up. Logan told officers the child was his and belonged at this apartment.
Inside the apartment officers observed what they believe to be illegal drugs and paraphernalia in plain view.
Logan Nickolas was arrested at the scene and taken to the Hancock County Jail. He faces preliminary charges of Neglect of a Dependent resulting in bodily injury (level 5 Felony) and Neglect of a Dependent where the defendant places dependent in a situation that endangers them (level 6 Felony). Charges are merely an accusation of a crime. Logan Nickolas is considered innocent until proven guilty.
This case is still under investigation, and more charges could be filed in the future. We were assisted at the scene by the Greenfield Fire Territory and the Indiana Department of Child Services.
