    You Won’t Believe These 4 ’90s Alt-Rock Gems That Somehow Weren’t Hits

The 1990s produced some of the most iconic alternative rock ever recorded, but for every chart-topping single, there were dozens of brilliant tracks that slipped through the cracks. Some were overshadowed by bigger releases; others arrived just a little too early—or too late—to catch mainstream fire. Yet these songs remain fan favorites, cult classics, and proof that the decade’s deep cuts were often just as powerful as its biggest hits. Here are four ’90s alt-rock gems that deserved far more attention than they got.

    1. “Breathing Underwater” – The Sundays (1997)

Known for their shimmering guitars and Harriet Wheeler’s feather-light vocals, The Sundays delivered one of their most emotionally rich songs with “Breathing Underwater.” It had all the makings of a breakout hit—lush production, a gorgeous melody, and lyrics that stuck with you long after the fade-out. Unfortunately, it dropped during a wave of heavier alt-rock and didn’t get the spotlight it earned.

    2. “Coma” – Bush (1994)

Before Bush exploded with Sixteen Stone, “Coma” showcased a raw, grungy energy that hinted at what the band would become. It’s darker and more abrasive than their later radio staples, which may have kept it off playlists. Still, the track’s urgency and unforgettable riff easily put it in the “should’ve been huge” category.

    3. “Drown” – Smashing Pumpkins (1992)

Though beloved among die-hard fans, “Drown” never received the mainstream push it deserved. Its slow build, layered guitars, and dreamy atmosphere captured the band at their most hypnotic. Had it released a few years later, during their commercial peak, it likely would have charted.

    4. “Not Too Soon” – Throwing Muses (1991)

Kristin Hersh’s expressive vocals and the band’s angular songwriting shine in this energetic standout. “Not Too Soon” had college-radio momentum, but it never crossed over—despite its infectious hook and distinctive edge.

These songs are proof that the ’90s alt-rock vault is still full of treasures waiting to be rediscovered.
