Man Killed in Overnight Shooting at Greenfield Amazon Warehouse; Investigators Say Self-Defense Possible

GREENFIELD, Ind. — A 39-year-old man was fatally shot early Friday morning at an Amazon warehouse in Greenfield, according to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies responded to reports of gunfire at the facility, located near County Road 300 North, just before 2 a.m.
When officers arrived, they found one man suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite emergency aid at the scene, the victim was pronounced dead shortly after. Authorities have not yet released his name, pending notification of family.
Investigators say preliminary evidence suggests the shooting may have been an act of self-defense. The person believed to have fired the weapon remained at the scene and is cooperating with law enforcement. No arrests have been made as of Friday morning.
Detectives are now working to determine the relationship between the two individuals and what led up to the deadly encounter. Sheriff’s officials said the men appeared to know each other in some capacity, though the nature of that connection remains unclear.
“The investigation is still in its early stages,” the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “We’re reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses to understand what exactly took place.”
Amazon representatives confirmed that the shooting occurred in the employee parking area but said the incident happened outside of regular working hours. The company expressed condolences to those affected and said it is cooperating fully with the investigation.
Authorities emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public or to Amazon employees. The Hancock County Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy as the investigation continues.
