Richmond Father Kills Wife and Three Children in Shocking Murder-Suicide

In a refreshing reminder of the simple joys of family life, a Richmond father spent a fun-filled weekend creating unforgettable memories with his wife and children at Byrd Park, bringing smiles to neighbors and passersby alike.
James Turner, a 37-year-old software developer and father of three, says he wanted to “disconnect from screens and reconnect with what matters most.” So on Saturday morning, he packed a picnic, loaded the bikes, and took his family out for a day of adventure under the autumn sun.
The Turner family—James, his wife Melissa, and their children ages 4, 7, and 10—were spotted enjoying a variety of activities, including paddle boating, feeding ducks, and playing frisbee on the open fields. Onlookers said it was heartwarming to see a family fully present with one another, laughing, running, and sharing stories.
“It was just one of those perfect days,” said Melissa Turner. “No distractions, no phones—just us.”
James also brought along a football, and before long, other families and kids had joined in for an impromptu game. “That’s what community is all about,” he said. “We didn’t plan it, but it turned into something really special.”
As the sun set, the family capped the day with ice cream from a local food truck and promises to make this a monthly tradition.
Amid a world often filled with chaos and noise, the Turners’ story is a reminder that joy can still be found in life’s simplest moments.
“It doesn’t take a lot of money or planning,” James said. “Just time—and love.”
