Massive Yacht Fire Rocks Myrtle Beach Marina, Sends Plumes of Smoke Skyward
A massive yacht fire broke out Saturday afternoon at a marina near Myrtle Beach, sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky and drawing a swift response from emergency crews.
The blaze erupted around 2:00 p.m. at the popular Marina at Grande Dunes, a well-trafficked spot for boaters and vacationers alike. Witnesses say the flames quickly engulfed the yacht, with explosions heard shortly after the fire began.
“I was walking along the docks when I heard a loud pop. I turned around and saw flames shooting up from a boat,” said local resident Megan Harper. “It was terrifying.”
Several fire departments responded to the scene, battling the flames both from the water and on land. Authorities say the fire was largely contained within an hour, but the yacht was completely destroyed. No injuries have been reported at this time.
“It’s a miracle no one was hurt,” said Fire Chief David Andrews. “This could have been much worse given how close the boats are docked.”
Photos and videos shared on social media showed towering flames and smoke visible for miles. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials say it may have started in the engine room.
For many locals and tourists, the incident was a sobering reminder of how quickly things can go wrong.
“I’ve lived here for ten years and never seen anything like it,” said boat owner James Tiller. “It really makes you think twice about safety on the water.”
The marina remains open, but some areas have been blocked off as authorities continue their investigation.
Officials urge all boat owners to check their fire suppression systems and be aware of fire safety protocols as boating season continues.
