BREAKING NEWS: Family Outing Turns Fatal: Cuyahoga River Claims Child’s Life—Search for Man Ongoing
Cleveland, OH – August 1, 2025 — A summer day on the water turned into a devastating tragedy Wednesday evening when an inflatable raft capsized on the Cuyahoga River, leaving one child dead and a man still missing.
According to authorities, a group of individuals was enjoying a family outing near the industrial section of the river when their inflatable craft overturned around 6:45 p.m. Emergency crews responded quickly to reports of people in distress near the Scranton Peninsula.
A young child, whose identity has not yet been released, was pulled from the water unresponsive. Despite life-saving efforts on scene and at a nearby hospital, the child was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
“This is a heartbreaking situation,” said Cleveland Fire Department spokesperson Lt. Maria Owens. “We remind everyone that the Cuyahoga River has unpredictable currents and conditions that can change rapidly, especially in areas not meant for recreational rafting.”
Search and rescue teams, including divers and aerial units, continued their efforts late into the night and resumed early Thursday morning in hopes of locating the missing adult male, believed to be in his 30s. As of 10 a.m., the man had not been found.
Officials believe that none of the individuals on the raft were wearing life jackets at the time of the incident. The exact cause of the capsizing remains under investigation.
The tragedy has left the local community shaken. Residents have taken to social media to express condolences and offer prayers for the family involved.
The incident is a stark reminder of the potential dangers of recreational activity on urban rivers. Authorities continue to urge caution and the use of proper safety equipment when venturing onto any body of water.
