Massive Fire Rips Through Panama City Beach Resort Condos—Dozens Displaced Overnight
PANAMA CITY BEACH, FL — A massive blaze tore through a popular Panama City Beach resort late Monday night, leaving several condos heavily damaged and forcing dozens of residents and vacationers to evacuate with little more than the clothes on their backs.
The fire broke out around 11:30 p.m. at the Gulf Breeze Condominiums, located along Front Beach Road. Firefighters from multiple departments responded to the scene, battling intense flames and thick smoke for hours. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
“It was terrifying,” said Melissa Grant, a tourist from Tennessee who was staying with her family on the second floor. “Alarms were going off, people were yelling, and we just ran.”
Officials confirmed that no lives were lost, but several people were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. One firefighter sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital as a precaution.
Bay County Fire Chief Eric Watson praised the quick response of crews, saying their actions likely prevented a greater tragedy. “Given how fast the fire spread, the fact that everyone made it out alive is a miracle,” Watson said.
The Red Cross is assisting displaced residents with temporary shelter, clothing, and meals. Emergency responders are also working with building inspectors to assess the structural integrity of the affected units.
As of Tuesday morning, the resort remains closed, and guests are being relocated.
The incident comes at the peak of Panama City Beach’s summer tourist season, with many wondering how long recovery efforts will take.
“It’s heartbreaking,” said condo owner Larry Jensen. “This is our home away from home. Now we don’t know when—or if—we’ll be back.”
Officials urge anyone wishing to help affected families to contact the local Red Cross chapter.
