Richmond Woman Facing Sex Charges Involving Minor Wants Out-of-County Trial
A Richmond woman accused of engaging in a sexual relationship with a juvenile is requesting a change of venue for her upcoming trial, citing concerns over receiving a fair and impartial jury in Wayne County.
According to court records, 31-year-old Samantha Harper was arrested earlier this year after allegations surfaced involving her inappropriate relationship with a 15-year-old male. The alleged incidents occurred over several months in 2024, leading to charges including sexual misconduct with a minor and child seduction.
Harper’s legal team filed a motion last week requesting that the trial be moved to a different county, arguing that pretrial publicity and the small-town nature of the community have made it difficult to ensure an unbiased jury pool. In the motion, defense attorneys claimed that extensive media coverage and public discourse surrounding the case have already painted their client in a negative light.
Prosecutors, however, have opposed the motion, stating that there is no substantial evidence proving that Harper cannot receive a fair trial in Wayne County. The judge has not yet ruled on the motion but is expected to do so at a hearing scheduled for later this month.
Court documents indicate that the alleged victim was a student at a local school
Court documents indicate that the alleged victim was a student at a local school where Harper previously volunteered for extracurricular programs. Investigators said text messages and social media exchanges between Harper and the juvenile played a key role in bringing charges.
Harper has pleaded not guilty to all charges and is currently out on bond. If convicted, she could face several years in prison and be required to register as a sex offender.
The case has drawn widespread attention across eastern Indiana, prompting increased scrutiny on how schools and community organizations vet adult volunteers.
The trial was initially scheduled to begin in early August, but may be delayed depending on the outcome of the venue request.
