‘We Belong Here’: Patty Gasso, Kierston Deal Speak Out on OU’s WCWS Journey
The Oklahoma Sooners are headed back to the Women’s College World Series, and head coach Patty Gasso made it clear — this trip is as meaningful as any.
“We belong here,” Gasso said after the Sooners punched their ticket to yet another WCWS appearance. “This team has fought through adversity, grown together, and earned every bit of this opportunity.”
Oklahoma’s season hasn’t been without its challenges.
With key departures from last year’s national title team and a roster full of new faces and rising stars, many questioned whether the Sooners could maintain their championship standard. But behind Gasso’s steady leadership and the emergence of players like sophomore pitcher Kierston Deal, the team has found its rhythm when it matters most.
“This team plays with heart,” said Deal, who delivered a standout performance in the Super Regionals.
“We’ve had to prove ourselves every step of the way, and I think that’s made us even tougher.”
Deal, who’s stepped up in high-pressure moments this postseason, credited the team’s culture and Gasso’s guidance for her confidence on the mound. “Coach Gasso always talks about staying the course — staying true to who we are. That’s been huge for me and for all of us.”
As Oklahoma heads to Oklahoma City, the message is clear: this isn’t just another WCWS run. It’s a statement of resilience, depth, and the unshakable identity Gasso has built over decades.
“We’re not satisfied just being here,” Gasso added. “We’re going there to compete — to win.”
With their legacy on the line and momentum building, the Sooners are once again poised to make noise on college softball’s biggest stage.
