‘He Deserved It’: Maggie Valley Shooter Says Victim’s Past as Sex Offender Justified Killing
Maggie Valley, NC— A shocking murder case out of Haywood County has taken a controversial turn as the suspect claims the shooting was morally justified due to the victim’s criminal history.
Authorities arrested 37-year-old Tyler James Morgan last Thursday after responding to reports of a shooting at a rural property on the outskirts of Maggie Valley. The victim, identified as 58-year-old Daniel Whitaker, was found dead at the scene with multiple gunshot wounds.
According to investigators, Morgan confessed to the shooting and told deputies that he “did what had to be done” after discovering Whitaker’s past as a registered sex offender. “He was a threat. He didn’t deserve to walk free,” Morgan reportedly told officers during questioning. Sheriff’s deputies say Morgan and Whitaker had known each other for several months, but it’s unclear what led to the confrontation.
Public records confirm that Whitaker was convicted of indecent liberties with a minor in 2005 and had served time before relocating to the Maggie Valley area. However, there is currently no evidence suggesting Whitaker posed any immediate danger or had reoffended.
District Attorney Ashley Whitman emphasized that personal beliefs do not justify vigilante justice. “This is not how justice works. No one has the right to take the law into their own hands, regardless of someone’s past,” she stated during a Friday press conference.
Morgan has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bond at the Haywood County Detention Center. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 2.
The case has ignited debate across social media, with some defending Morgan’s actions while others condemn the use of violence. Authorities are urging the public to let the justice system take its course.
