Crime in Paradise: 26-Year-Old Waikiki Woman Shot in Kakaako at Noon
Kakaako, Honolulu — A 26-year-old woman from Waikiki is in critical condition after being shot in broad daylight in Honolulu’s Kakaako neighborhood on Wednesday afternoon.
According to the Honolulu Police Department (HPD), the shooting occurred around 12:15 p.m. near the intersection of Cooke and Pohukaina streets, an area known for its mix of upscale condos, office buildings, and popular eateries.
Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots and seeing the woman collapse on the sidewalk. Paramedics responded quickly and transported her to The Queen’s Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition.
Police said the suspect fled the scene immediately after the shooting. As of Thursday morning, no arrests have been made, and authorities are asking for the public’s help in identifying the shooter. Surveillance footage from nearby businesses is being reviewed, and detectives have been canvassing the area for additional witnesses.
“It’s shocking,” said local resident Keoni Mahoe, who lives a block away. “This is a place people come to eat lunch, walk their dogs. You don’t expect gunfire here in the middle of the day.”
The motive for the shooting remains unclear. Investigators have not confirmed whether the woman was targeted or if the shooting was random.
The incident has rattled both residents and business owners in the fast-growing neighborhood, which has seen a surge in development over the past decade.
HPD is urging anyone with information about the shooting to call CrimeStoppers at (808) 955-8300.
As the investigation unfolds, city leaders are again facing questions about public safety and gun violence in a community known more for its art murals and craft breweries than violent crime.
This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
