Tragedy Strikes Team USA Star Maggie Steffens as Sister-in-Law Dies After Trip Abroad
Tragedy struck U.S. water polo star Maggie Steffens just days before the 2024 Paris Olympics when her sister-in-law, Lulu Conner, passed away unexpectedly at 26. Conner had traveled to Paris to support Steffens in her pursuit of a fourth consecutive gold medal. The family has not disclosed the exact cause of death, referring to it as a “medical emergency.”
Steffens, who married Conner’s brother Bobby in November 2023, described Lulu as “the light of the world,” noting her ability to bring joy and unity to those around her. In a heartfelt tribute during the opening ceremony, Steffens dropped a bouquet of flowers into the River Seine to honor her late sister-in-law.
Despite the profound loss, Steffens continued to compete, scoring two goals in the U.S. team’s 15-6 victory over Greece. She expressed that playing helped her cope with the overwhelming grief, stating, “I’m like so out of body in a way right now. And I just keep trying to remind myself what Lulu would want and how she would be.”
The U.S. women’s water polo team rallied around their captain during this challenging time. Teammate Ashleigh Johnson shared, “We literally are not leaving her alone,” emphasizing the team’s commitment to supporting Steffens.
Steffens’ resilience and the unwavering support of her teammates exemplify the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity. As she continues her Olympic journey, her determination serves as a testament to her dedication to both her sport and her family.
