Boom in Crime After Explosions Could Force Maggie Valley to Add More Cops
Maggie Valley, NC – A recent string of explosions has sent shockwaves through this quiet mountain town — both literally and figuratively. Local officials say the blasts have coincided with a sharp rise in criminal activity, prompting urgent discussions about expanding the town’s small police force.
The explosions, which occurred in early May, are still under investigation. While no injuries have been reported, the incidents have sparked fear among residents and raised concerns about public safety. According to interim Police Chief Mark Hensley, reported crimes have risen by nearly 25% in the weeks since the explosions.
“We’ve seen everything from property damage to thefts increase,” Hensley said. “We believe some of this activity may be opportunistic, taking advantage of the confusion and stretched resources.”
Currently, the Maggie Valley Police Department has just eight full-time officers — a number that town officials now believe may be insufficient in light of recent events. Town Manager Nathan Clark confirmed that a proposal to increase police staffing will be brought before the Board of Aldermen in their June session.
“Public safety is our top priority,” Clark said. “The department has done an outstanding job with the resources it has, but we must adapt to new realities.”
Some residents, while supportive of additional policing, have also called for more community outreach and mental health resources, citing the need to address the root causes of crime.
As investigators continue to search for those responsible for the explosions, the community remains on high alert. Law enforcement presence has increased in public areas, and patrols have been extended into nighttime hours.
Whether the crime spike is a temporary anomaly or the start of a troubling trend, Maggie Valley’s leaders appear poised to act — with more officers likely on the way.
