Tragedy in Richmond: Two Hero Officers Gunned Down in Brazen Robbery
Richmond, VA — The city of Richmond is reeling after two police officers were tragically shot and killed during a robbery on Wednesday night, sending shockwaves through the community and prompting an outpouring of grief from across the state.
According to the Richmond Police Department (RPD), Officers James Holloway, 36, and Marcus Bennett, 29, responded to an armed robbery in progress at a local convenience store near the Shockoe Bottom neighborhood shortly after 9:30 PM. Upon arrival, they were met with gunfire from the suspects before they could exit their patrol vehicle.
Both officers sustained critical injuries and were rushed to VCU Medical Center, where they were later pronounced dead. The suspects fled the scene, sparking a citywide manhunt involving local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. As of Thursday morning, one suspect has been taken into custody, while another remains at large.
“These officers gave their lives in the line of duty, protecting the very community they swore to serve,” said RPD Chief Gerald Smith at a press conference. “Their bravery will not be forgotten, and we will not rest until justice is served.”
The fallen officers, both decorated for bravery and known for their deep commitment to community policing, leave behind grieving families, friends, and colleagues. Officer Holloway is survived by his wife and two young children. Officer Bennett, a recent academy graduate, had just celebrated his one-year anniversary with the force.
Flags across the city have been lowered to half-staff, and a candlelight vigil is planned for Friday evening at Monroe Park. The Richmond Police Foundation has also set up a fund to support the officers’ families during this devastating time.
The community mourns, but their sacrifice will be remembered forever.
