Phillies Get Unfortunate News on $275 Million Alec Bohm Replacement.
The Philadelphia Phillies are among multiple teams expected to show interest in third baseman Nolan Arenado at the trade deadline. From the Phillies’ perspective, taking a chance on Arenado, despite him not playing the same type of baseball he’s expected to in recent years, wouldn’t be the worst decision.
Alec Bohm hasn’t swung the bat at the level the Phillies have hoped for, putting the front office in a tough decision.
Bohm, who was an All-Star as recently as last year, looked to be somebody who could be in the middle of this Philadelphia lineup for the next decade. Instead, the Phillies have put him in trade talks over recent months, signaling they could use another third baseman.
However, according to a recent report from Buster Olney of ESPN, the St. Louis Cardinals are unsure if they’ll trade Arenado due to how they’ve played in recent weeks.
“St. Louis Cardinals: They’re on a winning streak, and they’ve communicated to other teams that even if they aren’t a front-runner, they might keep their tradable players in what is the last season of John Mozeliak’s tenure as head of baseball operations,” he wrote.
The Cardinals, who play in one of the worst divisions in Major League Baseball in the National League Central, are only one game behind the first-place Chicago Cubs at 22-19. 8-2 over their last 10 games, there’s reason to believe that St. Louis could be a decent team if things go well.
Despite the Cardinals playing better, it doesn’t necessarily mean that Arenado might not be available. If the Cardinals believe they have a chance to win, but look to move him, the Phillies could still find their guy.
