Norman Mother Arrested in Infant’s Death, Charged with Murder
Norman, OK — A Norman woman has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder following the death of her infant child, authorities announced Thursday.
According to the Norman Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call at a residence in southeast Norman on Monday afternoon. Upon arrival, emergency responders found an unresponsive infant. Despite efforts to revive the child, the infant was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators say preliminary findings raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding the child’s death. Following an initial investigation and interviews, authorities arrested the infant’s mother, 25-year-old \[Name], late Wednesday evening. She was booked into the Cleveland County Detention Center on a charge of second-degree murder.
Police have not released the exact cause of death but indicated that evidence suggested the child’s injuries were inconsistent with an accident. Officials are awaiting a full autopsy report from the Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s Office.
“This is a deeply tragic case,” said Norman Police Chief Kevin Foster. “Our detectives are working closely with the medical examiner and other agencies to ensure a thorough investigation is conducted.”
Neighbors expressed shock and sadness over the incident. “It’s heartbreaking. You never think something like this could happen so close to home,” said one resident who wished to remain anonymous.
The Department of Human Services has been notified and is conducting its own inquiry. There were no other children in the home at the time of the incident.
The suspect is being held without bond pending a court appearance scheduled for early next week. If convicted of second-degree murder, she could face a prison sentence of 10 years to life.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities urge anyone with information to contact Norman Police at (405) 321-1444.
