R.I.P. – Margot Simond: The Skiing World Mourns the Loss of Margot Simond.

A Rising Star Gone Too Soon

The global alpine skiing community has been left in deep shock and mourning following the tragic passing of 18-year-old Margot Simond, a promising talent whose bright future was cut short after a fatal training accident in Val d’Isère on Thursday, April 24, 2025. The news was confirmed by the French Ski Federation (FFS) in a heartbreaking statement, marking a somber day for the sport and for all who knew and admired Margot.

Simond, who had been preparing for the highly anticipated Red Bull Alpine Park event scheduled for the upcoming weekend, lost her life after a crash on the Envers de Bellevard slope just before 1 p.m. According to reports, despite rapid medical intervention, her injuries were too severe, and she passed away at the scene. In the wake of this tragedy, the Red Bull Alpine Park event was immediately cancelled, as the entire skiing community struggled to come to terms with the devastating loss.

In an official statement, the French Ski Federation, alongside the Savoie Skiing Committee and Les Saisies Sporting Club — Margot’s home club — expressed their profound sorrow:

“The French Ski Federation, Savoie Skiing Committee, Les Saisies Sporting Club, and the entire skiing community are deeply saddened by Margot’s passing. They extend their heartfelt condolences to her family and loved ones, and offer their full support during this difficult time.”

Margot Simond was not just an ordinary athlete; she represented the new generation of skiers — talented, driven, and passionate. Her trajectory had been marked by an impressive string of achievements that hinted at a brilliant future at the highest levels of the sport. Only a month ago, she proudly competed at the 2025 FIS Junior World Championships in Tarvisio, Italy, where her performances turned heads and earned the admiration of her peers and coaches alike. Shortly after, Margot claimed the national junior slalom title at Les Menuires, a feat that positioned her as one of France’s most promising young athletes.

The International Ski Federation (FIS) also paid tribute, expressing its condolences through social media channels. Messages of grief and solidarity flooded in from around the world. Olympic champions Mikaela Shiffrin and Lindsey Vonn, icons of the sport, responded with broken heart and praying emojis — simple yet profoundly moving gestures that reflected the depth of their sorrow. Many other athletes, clubs, and federations followed, highlighting how Margot’s impact had already transcended borders despite her young age.

Margot’s love for skiing was evident to everyone who watched her compete. Her dynamic, fluid style on the slopes, combined with her fierce determination and joyful spirit, made her stand out. She skied with a maturity beyond her years, inspiring younger athletes and earning the respect of her elders. Her coaches often spoke not only of her natural talent but also of her humility, kindness, and unwavering work ethic.

Beyond the racecourses, Margot was known as a vibrant and generous soul. Friends describe her as someone who could light up any room with her smile, whose enthusiasm was contagious, and whose support for her teammates never wavered — in victory or defeat. Margot embodied the true spirit of sport: passion, respect, perseverance, and camaraderie.

Her tragic passing serves as a painful reminder of the inherent risks associated with high-level alpine skiing, a sport that combines breathtaking beauty and exhilarating speed with real danger. Yet, like so many of her peers, Margot embraced these risks in pursuit of excellence, adventure, and the sheer love of skiing. Her courage, spirit, and determination will forever be remembered and celebrated.

In the days following her passing, numerous initiatives have been proposed to honor Margot’s memory. Clubs across France and Europe have organized moments of silence during races and training sessions. Fellow athletes have adorned their helmets and race bibs with black ribbons. Plans are underway for a memorial race in her honor, which would bring together young skiers from around the world to celebrate the passion that Margot carried so brightly.

Margot’s journey reminds us all of the fleeting nature of life and the importance of cherishing every moment — especially those spent doing what we love. Her legacy will live on not only through the memories she leaves behind but also through the countless young athletes she inspired to dream big and ski fearlessly.

The entire alpine skiing community extends its deepest sympathies to Margot’s family, friends, coaches, and teammates. Words can hardly express the magnitude of their loss. As they navigate this unimaginable grief, the community stands united in offering support, love, and remembrance.

Margot Simond may no longer grace the slopes with her dazzling talent, but her spirit will forever carve its way through the mountains she loved so much. Every turn made in her memory, every race run in her honor, will ensure that her story continues — not as one defined by tragedy, but by the profound impact she had on those fortunate enough to know her.

As the mountains mourn one of their brightest daughters, we hold onto the belief that Margot’s passion, spirit, and love for skiing will echo through the valleys and peaks for generations to come.
