A Love Rekindled: Richmond Couple Returns to Camino de Santiago After 30 Years

Richmond, Indiana — For Judy and Bill Hines, the Camino de Santiago is not just a historical pilgrimage route; it’s where their love story began three decades ago. In 1995, both of them walked the ancient trail in Spain, not knowing that this journey would shape their lives forever. Recently, the couple returned to the iconic path to relive the experience that marked the start of their shared adventure.

The Camino de Santiago, also known as the Way of St. James, is a network of routes stretching across Europe, leading to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Pilgrims have walked these paths for centuries, seeking spiritual fulfillment, personal growth, and a sense of connection. For Judy and Bill, the 500-mile journey was about much more than just walking — it was about finding each other.

Bill, originally from the Chicago area, and Judy, who hailed from Richmond, met by chance during their travels in 1995. Both were at different stages in life, searching for something more profound, and the Camino provided that. They walked alongside one another, shared stories, and, as the days passed, formed a bond that would grow into a lifelong partnership.

Over the years, Judy and Bill’s connection deepened. After the Camino, they remained in touch, meeting up for short visits before eventually getting married. Their relationship, forged through shared experiences and mutual respect, has been one of enduring strength. The couple now has a family and a fulfilling life in Richmond, but the Camino remains a central part of their shared history.

The decision to return to the Camino was a sentimental one. Now, 30 years later, the Hines’ felt the pull to revisit the place that changed their lives. They walked the trail once again, but this time as a married couple, with the added experience and wisdom of life lived together. Their return wasn’t just about revisiting old memories, but about celebrating their journey together — not only on the Camino but also in life.

“The Camino was where it all began for us,” said Judy, reflecting on their experience. “It’s a place that represents more than just the start of our relationship. It symbolizes the strength of our connection and the beauty of walking through life side by side.”

For the Hines, the Camino de Santiago will forever be a reminder of where their love story began — a place where two people met and walked the same path, only to find that their paths would intertwine forever.
