Ex-Richmond woman held in fatal Wayne County fentanyl overdose
A Richmond former Richmond woman with a history of drug-related convictions has been accused of dealing the fentanyl that led to a fatal overdose in Wayne County.
Kimberly Jo Smith — who is observing her 53rd birthday on Wednesday — was arrested Tuesday in Dayton, Ohio, where she now lives.
She is preliminarily charged with dealing in a controlled substance resulting in death, a Level 1 felony carrying up to 40 years in prison.
She was arrested in a joint operation involving the Richmond Police Department’s narcotics team and Montgomery County, Ohio, sheriff’s deputies.
The former Hoosier continued to be held in the Montgomery County Jail in Dayton on Wednesday, awaiting extradition to Indiana.
In a news release, Richmond Police Chief Kyle Weatherly said, “Let this serve as a clear warning: We will not tolerate those who bring this toxic drug into our community.”
The Wayne County prosecutor’s office will determine what formal charges will be filed.
According to Wayne County court records, Smith has been convicted of crimes including dealing in cocaine (twice), forgery, fraud, theft and conversion.
