FEW MINUTES AGO: One person charged with murder in deadly Maggie Valley shooting
This is the third shooting death investigation in the Haywood County-Waynesville-Maggie Valley area since the beginning of the year. There was a murder-suicide scenario in the Hazelwood community of Waynesville in late April. Then, a local man was charged with murder in connection with an incident along Allens Creek in Waynesville. Now, the police chief in Maggie Valley is confirming this is another shooting death investigation along Dellwood Road.
Maggie Valley Police Chief Matthew Boger says it appears to be an early Monday morning shooting that left a man dead. Yellow tape surrounded the structure at 3211 Dellwood Road as investigators pieced together what happened. Maggie Valley officers placed the suspect at the scene in the back of a patrol car.
The suspect, 42-year-old Eriberto Exiga Cardena, of Hendersonville, is charged with murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, and possession of a controlled substance on jail premises.
“They just moved in, and I know that there’s been some…things going on there,” says Steve Davis, who runs Steve’s Cycle and Antique Auto across the road.
He says the incident does not surprise him.
He says he’s noticed a lot of activity at the property.
“A lot of cars come and go,” he says.
Just how the events unfolded — and why — is up to the police to determine.
Maggie Valley Police consider this an isolated event with no threat to the public.
This case remains under investigation. Cardena remains in the Haywood County jail.
