Roadway littered with soda cans during crash on Interstate 70 in Wayne County
Soda cans were littered across Interstate 70 in Wayne County on Sunday.
The cans were spilled onto I-70 westbound when three semis crashed into each other near mile marker 145. One of the trucks involved in the crash appeared to be hauling a trailer full of Canada Dry beverages.
A Facebook post from Centerville Fire and Rescue indicates the crash happened sometime before 2:37 p.m. Indiana State Police reported that the three-semi crash was one of two major crashes troopers responded to on I-70 westbound on Sunday.
Previous reporting indicates Centerville Fire and Rescue had responded to I-70 westbound at mile marker 142 around 10:50 a.m. because a semi had overturned and blocked the roadway.
Indiana State Police confirmed nobody was injured in the first crash. ISP also indicated that the second crash happened when law enforcement tried to reopen the road after cleaning up the first crash.
The second crash started when one semi was rear-ended by another semi as traffic began to flow on I-70 again. The collision between the two semis caused the rear-ended semi lurch forward and strike a third semi.
Nobody was injured in the second crash either, according to ISP. A state police spokesperson indicated the suspected cause of the second crash was inattentive driving.
Media notifications from the Indiana Department of Transportation indicate traffic on I-70 westbound was disrupted for more than six hours to allow officials to clean up and investigate both crashes.
As of this article’s publication, police were still working on Interstate 70 westbound. Both lanes of the roadway were reopened around 5:47p.m. I-70’s Centerville exit ramp, however, remained closed as of 5:50 p.m.
