Camino Real: You don’t do the Camino, The Camino does you!
You don’t do the Camino, The Camino does you!
I have to admit, on my first few Caminos’ I believed I was ‘doing’ the Camino.
Nothing wrong with that you may think, that was until a good friend of mine suggested to me that, ‘You don’t do the Camino, the Camino does you!
As soon as those words had left the mouth of my friend I immediately felt a humility, and a long overdue one at that.
Who was I to suggest that I ‘do’ the Camino?
It would not be uncommon to hear it said by self or other that ‘I’m doing the Camino!’
Of course we all know what we mean; you know what I mean and I know what you mean when we say we are going to do the Camino.
But there is a deeper place to understand, and that is that the Camino, the path, the ‘way’ has been there long before we were ever thought of.
We are stewards of the Camino.
We are members of such a sacred path, a sacred way that touches the soul, the spirit, the mind of each and every traveler, of each and every pilgrim.
Not only must we have respect for the Camino, the ethos of the Camino, the spirit and nature that is imbued in the Camino, but we must also have a deep respect for how the spirit and essence of the Camino provides for each one of us as we embark and transition along our own unique journey, a journey where we will have many opportunities to discover… Whatever that discovery may entail for each one of us.
Every Camino provides us with the personal tools to become humble and supports us in being able to transition to the next experience and encounters in our lives.
