RIP JOAN DEVEY: For those of you not in St. Anton and have not heard, Joan Devey has passed away.
For decades, Joan created a space that felt like home to countless skiers, travelers, and locals alike. First in Pettneu, then The Underground Bar & Restaurant in the heart of St. Anton with The Black Hole, a bustling basement bar that became legendary for its live music and electric atmosphere, and finally with The Underground on the Piste. Her venues were legendary not just for their lively après-ski atmosphere but for the memories forged within their walls. The laughter, the music, the friendships—all of it was a testament to Joan’s dedication and passion.
She had a reputation for being fiery, no-nonsense, and fiercely devoted to her business. But those who knew her best also saw her generosity, her humour, and her ability to bring people together. She ran her establishments with a firm hand and an unwavering sense of fairness, never afraid to stand her ground. Many a drunken skier, stumbling down from après-ski bars on the mountain, learned quickly that Joan would not tolerate disorder in her restaurant. She faced down those who tried to force their way onto reserved tables with the same courage and determination that she poured into every aspect of her life.
St. Anton has lost a true icon, but Joan’s spirit lives on in the friendships formed, and the countless lives she touched. Her legacy will forever be part of the fabric of St.Anton.
Rest in peace, Joan. You will be missed but never forgotten!
