A scammer claiming to be Sgt. Hill from the Springfield Police Department is making threatening calls in an attempt to extort money from the victim.
The caller insists that the victim has warrants and must pay the caller via bitcoin. If the caller hangs up and does not pay immediately, they claim that law enforcement will be dispatched to make an arrest.
Remember:
While we do have a Sgt. Hill at SPD, no one will ever call you from the Springfield Police Department to let you know you have a warrant.
No one from the Springfield Police Department will ever ask you for money, money transfers, or any other monetary exchange. The words “bitcoin” and “pay by gift card” should ALWAYS be immediate red flags to a scam.
If someone does call and claim to be from SPD, tell them you will call them right back and call the Springfield Police Department at 417-864-1810 to see if it was a legitimate call. If the caller threatens you when you say you will hang up, this is ALWAYS an immediate red flag for a scam.
Stay vigilant, Springfield, and be safe.
