JUST IN: Mets Lands Rafael Devers Deal In League-Altering Trade Idea.
There seems to be some drama brewing in Boston.
Last week, the Boston Red Sox landed superstar free agent Alex Bregman on a massive contract. The rumors quickly emerged that Bregman would play third base and Red Sox third baseman, Rafael Devers, would slot over as the designated hitter.
But Devers pushed back against this idea in the media and didn’t shoot down the idea of being traded.
Could the Red Sox actually explore a trade for their franchise cornerstone?
Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer recently pitched a trade that would send Devers to the New York Mets in exchange for a loaded package of three players.
Boston Red Sox infielder Rafael Devers
Here’s the deal pitched by Rymer that would send Devers to the Big Apple to join Juan Soto:
New York Mets receive: 3B Rafael Devers
Boston Red Sox receive: OF Starling Marte, RHP Brandon Sproat (Mets No. 1 prospect), OF Drew Gilbert (Mets No. 7 prospect)
At the end of the day, a Devers trade doesn’t really make sense unless he absolutely demands it. At this point, he hasn’t demanded it. In fact, he hasn’t requested it or even hinted at the fact that he wants to leave Boston.
But if the Red Sox were going to trade him, they likely wouldn’t want to land a $20 million contract like Starling Marte’s in return. Yes, they save money in this deal, but it’s Devers that they’re losing, so it doesn’t make sense to take on a bad contract.
