The Denver Broncos’ list of problems with their coaching staff suddenly grew fairly long following their Week 1 loss in Seattle. The enormous overreactions have been pervasive in media circles and the disgruntled Broncos fan base, and they’ve been hard to ignore. Naturally, before showcasing his
finest self, Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix will need more time to become settled in. It’s a sports cliche for a quarterback to develop a relationship with
his wide receivers, but the Broncos should start with them holding onto Nix’s passes. Nix insisted on Wednesday that the secret will be to distribute the
ball more widely and get it into their hands more quickly. Regarding that, the underuse of explosive deep-ball threat
Marvin Mims Jr. is particularly worrisome. Head coach Sean Payton doesn’t want Mims’ lack of inclusion to become a bigger issue than need be, but
the speedster registering only a dozen offensive snaps tells its own narrative. At last, Payton spoke to that specific elephant. Mims’ underutilization was
attributed to “part of the challenges when we have multiple receiver groups,” according to Payton. Naturally, we thought he would receive more than 12
[snapsnaps]. Much of it is dependent upon how much of the offensive game—three-receiver sets or base settings—we’re playing in nickel. That can change, but based on the club we’re facing, I believe his pitch total will increase from week to week.”
